S2, Ep. 3: Winning: A Black Migrant’s Story

An extra "finger" extends from his writing hand. That sixth digit is a pen with which poet Abednego W. Abuto writes his stories. These are eloquently drafted slices of the life of a man who, as the title of his new book asserts, learned to navigate life in America from a desolate No Man's Land. Just 12 years old when he and his family migrated more than 8,500 miles from Kenya to the U.S., Abednego would, in later years, experience the turmoil, fear, and hardship which can befall the undocumented in America. With help from “good neighbors” he persevered. Today, he is a legal U.S. resident and a published author. Here, Abednego talks about his life, his new book, and how, finally, he’s winning at creating his American dream.
